History

New York City Rock Camp (NYCRC) was formed in 2009, originally as Brooklyn Emerging Artists Rock Camp, by Director, Katie Blankenship. Katie, hailing from Tennessee, had participated in a similar program, the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp (SGRRC), the year before, and fell so in love with the program that she wanted to start a camp in New York, except for one big difference… this camp would be for both girls and boys. The first year was a huge success, with over 65 campers and 25 volunteers. The camp was able to provide scholarships to over thirty children that year.
In 2010, Katie welcomed Directors Issa Blowers and Connor Gaudet to the NYCRC family. They changed the name of the camp in order to encompass all five of New York’s boroughs and found a permanent home at Prospect Heights High School. NYCRC achieved 501c3 nonprofit status when it was umbrella-ed under Youth Empowerment through Arts and Humanities (YEAH), the parent organization of SGRRC and several similar Rock Camp programs. In 2010 NYCRC succeeded in providing scholarships to over 65% of campers, and will continue to develop their scholarship program in 2011.
